In 2000 the Lyell McEwin Hospital commenced a 3-stage redevelopment as part of the State Government’s modernisation of the state’s health system and to meet the increasing needs of the growing northern suburbs.
Stages A and B of the redevelopment include:
- Renewal of ageing infrastructure and new inpatient facilities.
- A 50-bed mental health facility and a multi-deck car park for 1,350 vehicles.
- Renewal of major central plant.
- A $7 million radiation oncology unit and extended emergency care unit.
Stage C of the redevelopment includes:
- Construction of a new 3-storey building, accommodating 96 beds – with a helipad on the roof.
- Construction of a new ambulatory care building to accommodate expanded outpatient and allied health functions.
- Construction of a new support services building to accommodate expanded Women’s Health centre facilities, administration, research, education and clinical offices.
- A range of internal reconfigurations, relocations, refurbishments and upgrade works to suit existing and expanded functional requirements.
- Women’s and children’s health hub.
This redevelopment will enable the hospital to provide a better range and quality of services to a population of almost 200,000 people in the Northern suburbs of Adelaide.
Saccardo Constructions was able to maintain a dedicated workforce for the long duration of the project with staged and variable resourcing levels to suit the builder’s requirements and programming.
